The Election Act Amendment Bill 2024 was approved by the National Assembly by a majority vote, with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq serving as the chair.
Despite fierce opposition, the bill introduced by Nazir Tarar, the prime minister of law, was eventually accepted.
In order to handle irregularities in the elections, the amendment gives the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) the power to establish an Election Tribunal.
Azam Nazir Tarar emphasized that the proposal suggests doing away with the condition that serving judges be appointed to the Election Tribunal in favor of solely retired judges.
The minister clarified that it is challenging for sitting judges to commit the necessary time to election-related matters because they frequently have a full caseload and several engagements.
The purpose of this change is to expedite the procedure and guarantee prompt resolution of electoral disputes.
