On Sunday, 19 inmates broke out of the District Jail Rawalakot in Azad Kashmir’s Poonch district, kidnapping police personnel in the process.
The infamous Ghazi Shahzad was among the prisoners who, according to police sources, subdued the guards at gunpoint and then made their getaway.
In his account of the events, SP Bagh Khuram Iqbal said that during the convicts’ escape, they opened fire on the police.
During the subsequent gunfight, one prisoner suffered injuries that ultimately led to his death. Since then, law enforcement organizations have set up blockades in an attempt to apprehend the escaped inmates.
Ghazi Shahzad has experience serving in a variety of activities. He formerly served in the Pakistan Army and another military group.
He had even run for office in the most recent general elections from the Palindri city seat on the United Movement ticket, but he had served a lengthy sentence in prison.
A few days after his press conference, Shahzad was taken into custody close to Hajira and charged under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) regulations. Significant security concerns have been raised by his recent jail escape.
