Monday saw the forced evacuation of hundreds of visitors and locals due to the “apocalyptic” scenes around the flames.
When the fires and dense black smoke reached coastal communities, including the beach resort of Kardamaina, several tourists were forced to spend the night at a football stadium and other locations.
Traveler Eileen Brown reported that she had to spend last night outside after being evacuated from her hotel in the vicinity on Sunday.
Although “no information from anyone” had been received, she told News that “locals and emergency services have been excellent.”
On social media, someone other expressed that they believed their tour operator had “abandoned” them, adding, “Evacuated from Kardamaina.”
Andrew, a fellow traveler from Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, was one of the people that left the fire via road as it grew.
“What was frightening [was] that we had a buggy, in flowing traffic, with fires meters away from our open buggy,” he said to News.
“Later, from our hotel 15 kilometers away, we could see the smoke.” It was inevitable given the volume of people we saw dropping cigarette ends everywhere.
