Tuesday night, a group of males, several of whom were dressed in masks and hoodies, were engaged in a pitched confrontation with police outside the mosque. Cries of “English til I die” could be heard prior to the violence starting.
According to police, the males may be members of the extreme right-wing English Defence League.
As it responded to the disturbance, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) declared a major incident.
Ten ambulances, on-call physicians, and a hazardous area response team were among the “high number of resources” that were dispatched to the incident.
It further stated that out of the 39 police officers who were treated, 27 were admitted to the hospital.
Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister, declared that those held accountable for the chaos will “feel the full force of the law”.
“Southport residents are in shock following the tragic event that occurred yesterday. He stated on X that “they deserve our respect and our support.”
“Those who have used violence and thuggery to take over the victim vigil have insulted the grieving community.”
