After reaching an agreement with the government to reduce the high electricity tariff and reassess agreements with independent power producers (IPPs), the Jamaat-e-Islami stated that it will be “delaying” its nearly 14-day protest sit-in.
The declaration was made late on Thursday following the end of the fifth session of negotiations at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi with the government’s negotiation team.
“We are deferring and not ending the sit-in,” declared JI Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, announcing that he will make the official announcement at a rally today about the decision to postpone the protest march.
In the event that the government does not comply with the demands of the JI chairman, the party threatened to hold another sit-in.
