A student from North Carolina named Brook Cheuvront was working as an intern at an NGO in Cape Town.
The 20-year-old student was reported missing on Saturday when she was unable to be reached and the monitoring software she was using to go on a solo trip stopped updating.
According to local media, her body was found on Sunday in Devil’s Peak, a steep area close to Table Mountain.
The hiker reportedly left her room at noon to ascend the mountain, according to South African National Parks (SANParks), the organization that oversees Table Mountain and other national parks.
When her monitoring app showed no updates, her friends alerted the police.
Rangers and wilderness search-and-rescue teams moved quickly to complete the search before calling it off late on Saturday.
The next day, a helicopter joined the search and assisted in finding her body atop Devil’s Peak.
“SANParks said in a statement that the circumstances surrounding the hiker’s death are still being investigated.
