Experts say the over 800 bills that remained on Newsom’s desk highlight the issue of overregulation in California.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has more than 800 bills on his desk to either sign into law or veto by next week during a busy legislative session.

Critics claim that the enormous volume of possible new legislation is more proof of the Golden State leadership’s preference for micromanaging the government.

Longtime Capitol lobbyist Chris Micheli pointed out that state legislators in California introduced nearly 4,400 proposals for the 2023–2024 session, surpassing the 4,100 proposed in the 2020–2021 term, despite the state continuing to be the most regulated in the nation.

Lance Christensen, a public policy specialist from California, issued a warning, stating that many of the laws introduced are merely “vanity projects” for lawmakers.
