Mohamed Kamran Asik, a 37-year-old citizen of Pakistan, passed away on September 21 at a police station in the heart of Athens, and an investigation into his death is currently underway.
According to the official autopsy report, there was a “prior beating” and waiting findings on laboratory tests, but the cause of death was labeled as “undetermined.” Significant bruising was visible on Asik’s body, which raised questions regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
Asik’s family attorney, Maria Sfetsou, said that additional testing was necessary to confirm that Asik’s death was most likely caused by an ischemia event connected to the beating. Because the inquiry was being carried out by the same department housed in the police station where the event happened, she intended to request that the investigation be transferred to another authority, alleging a possible conflict of interest.
