ISLAMABAD: In an effort to create constitutional courts and prolong the tenure of justices, the government has submitted a fresh appeal to the Supreme Court opposing the suggested constitutional changes.
The opposition parties, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are fiercely opposing the Center’s proposed constitutional amendment bill, which would drastically alter Pakistan’s judicial and parliamentary systems. This is the source of political unrest that the nation is witnessing.
In order to uphold the core values of judicial independence and the separation of powers, the petitioner asked the court to declare the proposed constitutional modifications that would increase the tenure of the chief justice to be illegal.
He also argued that Article 179, which stipulates the judges’ age of retirement should be declared the basic structure of the Constitution and that it cannot be amended.
