Even though there are numerous armed organizations operating in Balochistan, no one has taken credit for the Duki atrocity as of yet. Although eliminating violent individuals that pose a threat to public safety in the province is undoubtedly necessary, militarized methods to terrorism and insurgency have been tried in Balochistan for decades without succeeding in bringing lasting peace to this troubled region.
Therefore, while physical measures may only be effective if there are simultaneous political and economic initiatives to address the deprivation that fuels separatist ideology, investigations into the intelligence failures that preceded the terrorist assault in Duki and previous violent occurrences are imperative. But it seems the government is set on sticking to the same old script against voices in Balochistan that are peacefully calling for their rights. In this regard, rights campaigner Dr. Mahrang Baloch is facing charges of terrorism and sedition for her purported “anti-state campaign.” It’s confusing that a businessman from Karachi’s Landhi neighborhood filed the lawsuit.
