On the second day of the rain-hit inaugural Test on Thursday, New Zealand’s fast bowlers ran amok in cloudy conditions, bowling India out for a pitiful 46, their lowest Test total ever and their lowest on home ground.
Shortly after noon, Matt Henry scored 5-15 in circumstances more akin to those in Christchurch than Karnataka, while fellow speedster William O’Rourke dazzled in his debut match in India with 4-22 to destroy the hosts.
The Black Caps’ innings-low total of 46 runs was the lowest of any Indian team’s, falling well short of the 62 they scored against the hosts in Mumbai three years prior.
The 75 points India scored at home against the West Indies in New Delhi in 1987 was their previous lowest total.
