The Labour peer, who hosts News’ Electoral Dysfunction podcast, stated that all cabinet members were aware that the budget would be “painful” and that they were all held accountable for government actions.
Following several ministers pleading with Chancellor Rachel Reeves personally to ease some of the spending cutbacks being asked ahead of the budget, the prime leader is dealing with dissatisfaction within his top staff.
Ms. Reeves and Sir Keir have both cautioned time and again that the budget, which is due on October 30, would be “painful” and include some “difficult decisions”—with the aforementioned.
The magnitude of the sacrifices being sought in certain sectors to pay for wage hikes and spending increases others, however, is reportedly causing several cabinet ministers to worry.
Three government departments—the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government, the Department for Transport, and the Ministry of Justice—have reportedly complained to Number 10.
