Significant concerns have been raised by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) regarding specific provisions of the October 21-passed Constitution (Twenty-Sixth Amendment) Act 2024.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by HRCP Chairman Ahsan Iqbal Butt, the human rights watchdog voiced concern that the law would weaken judicial independence, despite the fact that the revisions are more moderate than those suggested in previous drafts.
“First, the manner in which constitutional benches are to be established, as well as their composition, raise serious concerns that, in practice, the credibility of these benches may be compromised by direct political influence,” he said.
