ISLAMABAD: Shoaib Shaheen, the head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has said that his party will contest the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which was just approved by the coalition government with a two-thirds majority. He has described the amendment as a “attack” on the nation’s legal system.
The 26th Constitutional Amendment bill, which gave the country’s parliament the authority to choose the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) from among the three most senior Supreme Court judges, was ultimately passed by the ruling coalition following weeks of political wrangling and discussions.
Numerous changes were made to the nation’s judicial system as a result of the amendments, such as the removal of suo motu powers, the establishment of constitutional benches, and the performance reviews of high court judges.
