WASHINGTON: The criminal charges against Donald Trump will effectively stop with his victory in Wednesday’s US presidential election, at least for the four years he holds the office.
Trump, the first former US president to be charged with a crime, spent a large portion of this year dealing with four separate cases. The charges ranged from his attempts to conceal a hush money payment made during his 2016 campaign to his attempts to rescind his loss in the 2020 election.
He became the first former US president to be convicted of a felony in May after a jury in New York found him guilty of fabricating company records related to the payment.
On October 24, Republican Trump declared to an interviewer that he would dismiss US Special Counsel Jack Smith, who oversaw the federal charges.
