In a televised speech commemorating his 100 days in power, Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus urged the country’s “patience” and promised that general elections will take place following the completion of electoral and institutional changes.

Yunus, who was appointed to head the transitional administration after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in August, declared, “Once the necessary and essential reforms are complete, we will hold the much-anticipated election.”

Citing the necessity for substantial electoral and constitutional reforms, the 84-year-old leader stated that an election commission would be established “within a few days,” although he did not specify an election schedule.

“Until then, I ask for your patience. Our goal is to create an electoral system that will last for many years.
