As demonstrations broke out on Saturday after six deaths were found, police in the northeast Indian state of Manipur have arrested 23 individuals for looting and burning the homes of ministers and MPs in the capital city of Imphal.
Following the recovery of the six dead, who were thought to have been abducted from the Meitei community, protesters are calling for accountability for the atrocities in the area.
At least 250 people have died and 60,000 have been homeless in the area since May 2023 as a result of intercommunal conflicts between the Christian Kuki and Hindu Meitei populations.
Sunday saw the discovery of the bodies of a mother and a two-year-old child in a river; they are thought to be members of a missing Meitei family. The body of a Kuki guy was also discovered.
