Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is still facing legal challenges, but recent events have moved him closer to being released. Although he has been cleared or released on bond in a number of well-known instances, the government still has the right to hold him in custody because of unresolved charges.
A lower court sentenced Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to seven years in prison in a contempt of court case. But in July 2024, the Islamabad High Court cleared them.
In a separate case, a lower court sentenced Khan to 10 years in prison for allegedly disclosing a classified document (a “cipher”); however, the High Court reversed this decision in June 2024.
In two Toshakhana cases involving gifts he received while serving as premier but failed to disclose, he received cumulative terms of 17 years (3 and 14 years, respectively).
