In his new memoir, Five Trips: An Investigative Journey into Mental Health, Psychedelic Healing, and Saving a Life, former ABC anchor Kendis Gibson discusses a problematic work culture at News.
According to Gibson’s book, his 2018 suicide attempt was significantly influenced by his encounters with racism, bullying, and hazing at the network.
When Gibson started working at News in 2014, prominent coworkers, including Michael Strahan and Robin Roberts, welcomed him. Later on, though, he came with a quite different world.
When he arrived, he was reportedly warned by an unidentified Black correspondent, who said, “Welcome to Mickey’s plantation.” Gibson took this remark as a sign of more pervasive, systemic racism in the company.
