Security has been stepped up in Germany and France in advance of New Year’s Eve festivities.
Prior to New Year's Eve celebrations, France and Germany increased security after receiving concerns that the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas may increase the likelihood of terrorist strikes. In response to a report suggesting that Islamist organizations might be organizing an attack on the city's renowned cathedral on New Year's Eve, police in the German city of Cologne are increasing their force. During a press conference, Officer Martin Lotz announced that submachine gun-wielding officers wearing protective vests would be stationed across the city. The gothic cathedral in the city declared via a social media statement that it will only be open for church services till further notice "due to the current security situation."
