Christopher Nolan was reminded of Cillian Murphy’s transition into Oppenheimer when the Oscar nominations were announced.
The pair’s response follows the biopic about Robert J. Oppenheimer’s 13 nominations; the 53-year-old director is up for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Additionally, the former member of Peaky Blinders received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor, alongside Emily Blunt’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Robert Downey Jr.’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Christopher remarked to Variety that he was reminded of the hair and makeup trials he conducted for Heath Ledger’s role as the Joker by Cillian’s metamorphosis.
The actor appears to be bringing an iconic character to life as he puts on a hat and lights a cigarette in the corner of his mouth. You are just getting started.
You’re beginning to notice his movement. It’s an exciting time. Every movie has it,” he remarked.
However, the 47-year-old actor disclosed that it was in his native Ireland that he learned of his historic nomination.
In actuality, I’m in Cork City in my folks’ house. Today, my wife and I spent time with my parents. So that was incredibly pleasant, Cillian said to the publication.
The actor, who is well-known for his modest demeanor, continued, “We had a cup of tea and a slice of cake. We were in my childhood kitchen when the categories were declared. It was really pleasant. My mother prepared a sponge cake. It tasted really good.
