OSLO: Nihon Hidankyo, a group of Japanese atomic bomb survivors who advocate against the weapons that are resurfacing as a threat eight decades after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, will receive this year’s Nobel Peace Prize on Tuesday.
As nations like Russia increasingly threaten to violate the worldwide taboo on the use of nuclear weapons, the three co-chairs of Nihon Hidankyo will get the coveted award during a ceremony in Oslo’s City Hall that begins at 1pm (1200 GMT).
“Nuclear weapons and humanity cannot co-exist,” Terumi Tanaka, one of the three co-chairs, stated during a press conference in the Norwegian capital on Monday.
“Humanity may come to its end even before climate change brings its devastating impacts,” claimed the 92-year-old.
