Edgar Lungu, the former president of Zambia, is not eligible to run for reelection in 2026, according to the country’s highest court.
The 68-year-old politician has already served the two maximum terms permitted by law, according to the Constitutional Court’s ruling.
In January 2015, Lungu was elected president for the final 20 months of his predecessor’s term. In October 2014, President Michael Sata passed away while in office.
Lungu had maintained that since he did not complete his five-year tenure, this should not be taken into account. However, the court disapproved, overturning earlier decisions that had allowed him to run three years prior after he was defeated by Hakainde Hichilema.
As a result, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has been elected and served in government twice. He is prohibited from running in any next elections by the [constitution].
