A day after a contentious presidential election, Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia announced his defeat, allowing opposition candidate and former leader John Mahama to make a historic political comeback.
Prior to the electoral commission’s official pronouncement, Bawumia stated in his concession speech on Sunday morning that internally compiled results indicated that “Mahama has won the presidential election decisively.”
According to Bawumia, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the opposition party, also prevailed in the legislative election. “To avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” he continued, he made the concession.
Bawumia added, “The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision.” “I have since called H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” he stated.
