KARACHI: Police reported Friday that an attack on a polio team in the Korangi region of the port city was the most recent instance of violence against personnel sent to give children life-saving drops.
Only in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan is polio still common, and vaccination teams are regularly attacked, sometimes leading to the deaths of security personnel and polio workers.
Police said that when polio workers went to a household in a Korangi neighborhood to give them vaccinations, the men and women in the family physically assaulted the workers and took their cell phones.
Two police officers were hurt, and the same number of polio workers were hurt.
