Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who famously authored diaries under the pen name Gul Makai criticizing the Taliban’s anti-girls education practices in Swat, will take part in a high-profile summit on girls’ education that is planned for January 11 and 12 in Islamabad.
The summit intends to increase awareness of women’s empowerment in Muslim communities and promote girls’ education.
On October 9, 2012, Malala, a well-known supporter of girls’ education, escaped a potentially fatal attack in Swat Valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, by the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
She was targeted on her way home from school, along with her companions Shazia and Kainat. Malala was critically hurt in the incident, taken overseas for medical care, and has only made a few subsequent trips to Pakistan.
