Pakistan verified another incidence of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) for 2024 on Wednesday, bringing the nation’s total to 72, which is a worrying development.
The most recent incidence, according Pakistani health officials, concerns a girl from Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On December 31, 2024, the afflicted girl’s samples were collected.
Despite numerous mass vaccination campaigns, the fight against polio remains difficult, since this confirmation is the 11th recorded case from DI Khan.
The 71st case was confirmed in Jacobabad, Sindh, a day earlier by the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication.
As of right moment, there are 72 WPV1 cases nationwide in 2024, with 27 cases reported from Balochistan.
