ISLAMABAD: Zunaira Qayyum, a teenager, has been named the Youth Advocate for Climate Action and Girls’ Empowerment by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef).
The announcement of Zunaira’s appointment during the “Breathe Pakistan Climate Conference” highlighted her outstanding efforts as a child rights and climate action advocate.
The 14-year-old, who is from Balochistan, has represented Pakistan’s youngsters at COP 29 and other national and international gatherings.
Her study on how floods brought on by climate change affect secondary education for girls in Hub, Balochistan, was acknowledged as one of the 2023 Unicef Policy Research Challenge winners.
Due to her enthusiasm for advocacy, Zunaira trained teenagers in Hub, Balochistan, using Unicef’s Youth Advocacy Guide. During this time, she participated in research, policy engagement, and campaign network development.
