WASHINGTON: In a late-night decision that represents a significant blow to President Donald Trump’s tough immigration policy, the US Supreme Court temporarily halted his use of a centuries-old statute to deport Venezuelan migrants without holding hearings.
Two of the nine-member panel’s most conservative justices dissented, according to the emergency ruling.
The government’s use of the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, which was last applied to the apprehension of Japanese-American citizens during World War II, to remove migrants is temporarily stopped by the order.
