LONDON: The UK tax authority, His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), has dropped the case against Tariq Mir, a former senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and paid part of his legal fees. However, the case against Altaf Hussain, the founder of the movement, and other senior MQM leaders is still pending.
Mir informed the court that he was not liable for MQM’s £1,476,406.08 debt to HMRC and that he had not received the claim form that HMRC had sent him.
Mir’s application was reviewed by the court, and the judge ruled in his favor, overturning the default verdict against him. Mir then filed an appeal at the Tax Tribunal against HMRC’s underlying decision to make him accountable for MQM’s tax.
