According to a United Nations estimate, approximately 72,000 migrant deaths and disappearances have been recorded along international migration routes in the last ten years, with the majority of victims coming from nations plagued by crises.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that last year’s migrant death toll was the greatest on record, with at least 8,938 people dying while traveling.
“These numbers are a tragic reminder that people risk their lives when insecurity, lack of opportunity, and other pressures leave them with no safe or viable options at home,” said Amy Pope, Director General of the IOM.
Nearly three-quarters of all migrant deaths and disappearances since 2014 have happened as a result of individuals fleeing from humanitarian crises, according to a report from her UN agency.
