Madrid: Spain’s energy minister said on Wednesday that an unusual blackout occurred throughout Spain and Portugal on April 28 due to a sudden loss of power generation at a substation in Granada, followed by failures seconds later in Badajoz and Seville.
The three initial accidents, the reason of which has not yet been identified, resulted in a generating loss of 2.2 gigawatts of electricity, which set off a chain reaction of grid disconnections, Energy Minister Sara Aagesen informed legislators.
The power outage is the subject of multiple investigations, but this is the first time Spanish authorities have identified a precise cause. It will take time to determine the source of the outage, and there probably won’t be any easy solutions for what seems to be a complicated problem, Aagesen added.
