The military was called in to help with rescue attempts after landslides caused by severe rain in China’s southwestern Guizhou province on Thursday left at least four people dead and 17 missing.
State broadcaster CCTV said Thursday that two people had perished in Changshi township and two in the adjoining village of Qingyang, where a landslide had first trapped 19 people from eight different houses.
Additionally, risk warnings for geological disasters in the surrounding areas were issued by authorities.
Climate change is causing China to experience longer and hotter heatwaves as well as more frequent and erratic heavy rainfall. According to officials, the nation’s large population makes it particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change.
