ISLAMABAD: The constitutional bench of the Supreme Court has noted that the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) is not eligible for reserved seats, raising concerns over how independents can join a non-parliamentary political party.
Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan presided over an 11-member constitutional bench that heard arguments on whether the SIC may assert its right to reserved seats following the addition of independent candidates during a live-streamed hearing on the subject.
Although independents are allowed to join a party that has representatives in Parliament, the court stated that it is unconstitutional for them to join a party that did not run in the elections.
