In Gaza, a contentious new aid distribution organization supported by the US and Israel has started operations.
According to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, food distribution has started after truckloads of food were brought to secure locations on Monday. On Tuesday, hundreds of Palestinians gathered food packs from a location in the southern city of Rafah.
Using armed U.S. security contractors, the GHF seeks to circumvent the United Nations as the primary humanitarian provider for the 2.1 million people in Gaza, where experts have warned of impending hunger following an 11-week Israeli blockade that was temporarily lifted.
A United Nations spokesperson called the operation a “distraction from what is actually needed” and called on Israel to reopen all of the crossings.
