KARACHI: Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah reported in the early hours of Tuesday that at least 216 prisoners had escaped from Karachi’s Malir Jail during the evacuation due to the earthquake.
He told the media that more than 80 inmates who had fled on Monday night had since been apprehended, and that a search was being conducted for the remaining fugitives.
According to Superintendent Shah, the jailbreak happened when prisoners from Circles No. 4 and 5 were evacuated from their barracks during the tremors as a precaution.
At the time, over 600 inmates were not inside their cells. Amid the chaos, 216 managed to flee,” he told reporters. He added that over 135 prisoners remain at large, and search efforts are ongoing.
