ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has flatly denied rumors that Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff, is interested in taking over as president or that President Asif Ali Zardari may be asked to resign.
The premier promised that there was no reality to the reports that were making the rounds in some parts of the media, calling them “mere speculation.” “Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed any desire to become the president, nor is there any such plan in the offing,” the prime minister said unequivocally in an interview with The News on Friday. He emphasized that the relationship between President Zardari, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and himself is based on respect for one another and a shared objective: the prosperity of Pakistan.
