Washington: Miguel Diaz-Canel, the president of Cuba, was subject to the first sanctions imposed by the United States on Friday for his involvement “in the Cuban regime’s brutality toward the Cuban people.”
It is the most recent in a string of actions taken by the administration of US President Donald Trump to put more pressure on the Cuban government.
In an X post on the fourth anniversary of massive anti-government riots in Cuba, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States was limiting visas for the Cuban president and other senior government leaders.
In July 2021, protests erupted around the island as thousands of people came to the streets to voice their disapproval of the lack of essential products and the deteriorating economic situation.
The largest protests since Fidel left hundreds jailed, one person dead, and scores injured.
