Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) soldiers handed up the first batch of firearms on Saturday, marking a new chapter in Turkish history, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for full support of the disarmament of Kurdish militants.
In a symbolic but important step toward putting an end to a decades-long conflict against Turkey, thirty PKK militants burned their guns at the mouth of a cave in northern Iraq on Friday.
“The evil of terrorism has begun to come to an end as of yesterday. A new chapter in history has begun, and today is a new day. Erdogan told his AK Party members in Ankara that “the doors of a great, powerful Turkey have been flung wide open today.”
