Syed Zulfikar Bukhari, the head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), told a U.S. legislative group that the country’s general elections in 2024 were “designed to silence the democratic voices of millions,” referring to them as the “most brutally rigged elections in Pakistan’s history.”
Bukhari, a former assistant to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, revealed what he called systematic political repression and electoral fraud in his remarks before the US Congress’s Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.
“Let me begin with the general elections of February 8, 2024, which destroyed what little of Pakistan’s democratic façade remained,” he said to the panel. “The rigging started well in advance of the actual election day.”
