The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) issued a statement on July 2 that was unprecedented in the organization’s history.
It stated, “HRCP has encountered a number of capricious, unlawful, and unwarranted acts in the last few months that have hindered the organization’s capacity to fulfill its mandate.”
The statement described the harassment and intimidation of HRCP employees by people posing as security agency personnel.
“We implore the authorities to uphold the essential freedoms of association… and to guarantee that human rights advocates can function without worrying about retaliation,” the statement went on.
The late lawyer and activist Asma Jahangir was a co-founder of the HRCP, which was founded in 1987.
