KARBALA: Authorities said on Sunday that more than 600 pilgrims in Iraq were momentarily admitted to the hospital due to respiratory issues following the inhalation of chlorine due to a water treatment station leak.
On the path between the two Shiite holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, which are situated in the south and center of Iraq, respectively, the tragedy happened overnight.
Karbala is home to the shrines of the venerated Imam Hussein (RA) and his brother Abbas (RA), and it is anticipated that several million Shiite Muslims would travel there this year.
There, Shiites will observe the 40-day mourning period known as Arbaeen, which honors the passing of Hussein (RA), the Prophet Mohammed’s grandson (PBUH).
