That is, what we believed.
Then came quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes, 28, is set to play in his fourth Super Bowl on Sunday, the last of his only seventh season in the NFL. Should he win, he will tie Brady’s three rings from his first seven seasons.
Mahomes has created the same sense of unstoppability and inevitability that Brady did by leading the Chiefs to their fourth consecutive Super Bowl appearance and the type of
supremacy not seen in the NFL since Tom Brady coached the New England Patriots, the all-powerful team.
Mahomes is also ahead of Brady in many statistical categories, so it begs the question: Will he be able to catch the GOAT?
How do the stats of Mahomes and Brady compare?
After just one game each in their rookie seasons, both quarterbacks have enjoyed great success in the next six seasons, with Mahomes even surpassing Brady in many areas.
Although Mahomes will have played in more big games—four in his first six full seasons—Brady had an amazing start, winning the Super Bowl three times in his first four years as a starter.
It’s also amazing to note that Mahomes has qualified for the AFC Championship, which is the game played before the Super Bowl, in each of the six seasons. Additionally, because Brady has only missed one play-off game, Mahomes (14) has more play-off victories than Brady (12) had during the same time period.
He is therefore actually delivering more than Brady did throughout his first six seasons. Ironically, this could have been even more if Brady hadn’t defeated Mahomes in the play-off games, the AFC championship game, and the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Bucs.
