When Hussam Okal and his family sought refuge with his family at a training center in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis in October, a United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) staffer discovered the facility was packed with an estimated 22,000 people looking for safety from Israeli bombs.
“We are working on both sides. “On the one hand, we’re trying to keep our families safe, and on the other, we’re trying to help the displaced people,” he explained at the time. “As UNRWA staff, we carry a humanitarian message to try to offer as much assistance as we can.”
