The website claims that after receiving “executive orders” from the Indian government, it removed the pages.
In a statement, X stated that it “disagreed with these actions” and that the orders were “subject to potential penalties, including imprisonment”.
X provided an explanation on their official account, @GlobalAffairs.
Earlier, a number of activists had voiced complaints regarding the removal of their posts.
Mohammed Zubair, an Indian journalist and X user, claimed on Monday that “many influential X accounts” of journalists, influencers, and well-known farm unionists covering the protests by Indian farmers were “suspended”.
X clarified that the withholding of accounts and posts was only occurring in India and was done so “in compliance with the orders”.
But it also stated that “freedom of expression should extend to these posts” and that the platform disagreed with the government’s decision.
