Paul Scully: A former minister for the Tory party issues a warning, saying their ‘ideological thrust to the right’ won’t win the general election.

An ex-minister for the Conservative Party has cautioned that a "ideological shove to the right" will prevent his party from winning the next general election.

Paul Scully, who made his resignation from Parliament known on Monday, stated that the Conservatives’ “core vote” is in danger of dwindling on News’ Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge.

“You can’t win an election if all you have is an ideological push to the right,” he declared. That corner doesn’t have enough voters to win an election.

“The core vote will eventually dwindle or disappear.

“So you begin in the center. I won’t sit there at the deep end of the pool and invite folks to join me if I’m trying to entice them to come in.

“You swim in the shallow end, in the middle ground or something like that and say ‘let me explain why you should come with me’.”
