Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will visit Cyprus this week as the union considers establishing a humanitarian corridor across the Mediterranean island to assist the Gaza residents, according to her spokesperson on Wednesday.
“Our efforts are focused on making sure that we can provide aid to Palestinians,” the spokeswoman told media, adding, “We all hope that this opening (of the corridor) will take place very soon.”
In Nicosia, a government official stated, “On Friday, she will visit, along with the (Cypriot) president, the infrastructure related to some phases of the plan.”
Cyprus, located around 370 kilometers (230 miles) northwest of Gaza, is the closest European Union member state to the region. It has been campaigning for months for the establishment of a continuous, one-way sea route carrying aid directly to the enclave.
