The ruling coalition’s presidential nominee, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, won the election with a landslide on Saturday, receiving congratulations from lawmakers around the country.
Zardari became the only civilian president to be elected for a second time after receiving 411 votes from the electoral college, defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) nominee Mahmood Khan Achakzai.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the president-elect on his victory, stating that elected members of both province and national legislatures had faith in the ruling coalition’s nominee.
He expressed hope that Zardari will carry out his obligations as president well and represent the power of the Centre.
“Zardari’s election as president represents the continuation of democratic values,” PM Shehbaz remarked, promising on behalf of the ruling coalition to strive for Pakistan’s progress and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah congratulated Zardari on becoming president for a second term.
