Finding higher education statistics in Pakistan requires assembling data from several sources and double-checking it to make sure it makes sense. Occasionally, though, you will come across longitudinal figures from a credible source that completes the puzzle you have been assembling from disparate, isolated data points.
Major participants in the public higher education sector gathered for two days in Islamabad last week. The Higher Education Commission (HEC), vice-chancellors of numerous public universities, and members of the (higher) education bureaucracy were there.
For its recurring expenses in FY2017–18, the HEC requested Rs72 billion, but only received Rs63 billion—roughly 15% less than what was requested.
Since then, there are 153 public universities, an increase of 53%.
