President Biden is being urged by a group of leading Senate Republicans to prevent the lifting of oil sanctions for the totalitarian government of Venezuela, which is still persecuting its opponents.
Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska, led the seven lawmakers in a letter to the president on Friday, urging him to revoke the so-called General License 44, which is scheduled for renewal later this week. They contended that since the Biden administration granted the six-month authorization to Venezuela last year, the country’s government has not complied with important obligations pertaining to holding free and fair elections.
History has repeatedly shown that it is ineffective to placate despots. We implore you to reimpose and implement in full all US sanctions against [Nicolás] Maduro.
